Getting your book published
Hackley Public Library, Julia Hackley Room. Have you written a book but don’t know what steps to take next to get it published? Roger Rapoport, of RDR Publishing, will discuss the steps to getting your book in print and share his extensive knowledge of the publishing industry. Mr. Rapoport is a published author who worte “Hillsdale, Greek Tragedy in America’s Heartland”, and “After the Death of a Salesman : Business Trips to Hell”, and over 20 other nonfiction titles. His latest book is “Citizen Moore: the life and times of an American Iconoclast”. He is a former reporter for the San Jose Mercury-News, the San Francisco Chronicle, and other newspapers and his work has been published in many collections, magazines, and other publications. How to Ride the MATS Bus
Hackley Public Library. A 2 1/2 hour traveling workshop for all ages and abilities -- seniors, parents, kids -- that includes a ride on a bus, getting on the right bus, paying the fare, pass options, transfers, reading the schedule, where to catch a bus, bringing your bike on the bus and more. Doing, not just talking about it. Sign up in advance is encouraged so that there are enough bus seats (MATS will add another bus if it's needed). For more information call 231-722-7276.

Short History

The Library opened in 1890. The building, listed on the Michigan Register of Historic Places, was a gift from lumber baron Charles Hackley to the City of Muskegon Public Schools.

Groups that Use the Library

Yarnspinners

The Yarnspinners meet every second Wednesday from 7:00-9:00 pm, September through May, in the Torrent House (across the street from the library) to encourage, share, and promote storytelling. For more information call 231-727-2118.

Great Books is a reading and discussion group led by Cynthia Price. Meets the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month in the Julia Hackley Rom of the Library.

Ulysses Group

Friends of Hackley Public Library

Purpose: The Friends of Hackley Public Library is a 501(C)3 membership organization formed to:

  1. Provide substantial support to and for the benefit of the Library.
  2. Pursue independent activities and programs which support or benefit the Library.
  3. Support and cooperate with the Library in developing and promoting its services and facilities.
  4. Foster an informed interest in the Library in the community.
  5. Encourage the use of the Library's resources.
  6. Aid the Library in enhancing the cultural life of the community.
  7. Promote and encourage gifts, endowments, and bequests to or for the benefit of the Library.
  8. Stimulate interest in books and libraries by maintaining an association of like-minded persons.

On-going Activities:

  1. Candlelight Dinner. A festive holiday meal followed by entertainment, held by candlelight in the main reading rooms of the library. Members and guests by invitation.
  2. Annual Used Book Sale (TBA). Thousands and thousands of used books fill the first floor of the Torrent House. Funds raised benefit the fund for the repair and restoration of the stained glass at the library. Volunteers are always needed for intake, sorting, and sales. A gala pre-sale (with fabulous refreshments) is held for members only the Thursday evening, before the public sale from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. $20 minimum memberships are available at the door. The public sale is on a Friday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hard covers are $1.00 and paperbacks are $.50. $3 a bag full sale starts at 3:00 on Saturday. Date TBA
  3. Charles H. Hackley Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities. Held in May each year, an individual with some tie to Muskegon who has made a distinguished contribution to some area of the humanities is invited to present a lecture in his/her area of expertise.

The current Board members are Bill Ashley, Nancy Bruhn, Mary Cronenwett (Past President), Betsy Cutler, Dave Dawes (vice president), Linda Decker (Secretary), Amber DeLong, Gene Fethke (Treasurer), Susan Holkeboer, Phyllis Laurin, Angela Maloy, Charlotte Olson, Jack Rice, Kathleen Snider, Marilyn Swanson, and Barbara Wenk (President).

There are 6 levels of Friends: Basic membership is $20, Hackley Associate is $40, Torrent Associate is $50, Charlie's Classics is $65, Hackley Patron is $100, and Hackley Benefactor is $500. To become a member mail your check, payable to Friends of Hackley Public Library, to The Friends of Hackley Public Library, 316 W Webster Ave, Muskegon MI 49440-1281. Every membership is acknowledged with a receipt and is deductible for tax purposes.
