Public Computers & Internet

Hackley Public Library offers computer access, Wi-Fi, printing, wireless printing, and copying.

To reserve a computer using your Library card barcode number, click HERE, call 231-722-8012, or stop into the library.

Walk-in guest passes are available for computer use on a first-come, first-served basis.

Appropriate Internet Use Policy

Mission Statement

The Hackley Public Library is dedicated to 1) promoting knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, 2) combating ignorance, intolerance, and indifference, 3) promoting the free exchange of ideas, and 4) conserving our national and local cultural heritage.

The mission of Hackley Public Library is to provide programs and services to unify the community, promote creativity, and encourage lifelong learning while preserving our storied past and preparing for an ever-changing future.

Purpose

In accordance with the mission of the Hackley Public Library, the Library provides users with access to information and communication over the Internet, a diverse and dynamic global network of computer networks rich in informational, educational, cultural, and recreational resources.

Information

The Hackley Public Library does not control the availability of Internet information links, which often change rapidly and unpredictably. Not all sources on the Internet provide accurate, complete, or current information. Information provided through the Internet may be false, misleading, controversial, inappropriate, disturbing, and/or illegal. Use of any information obtained via the Internet is at the user’s risk.

Availability

The use of the library’ Internet stations is limited to sixty (60) minutes per person per day because of demand. If there are at least four (4) vacant stations, one thirty (30) minute extension may be given.

In order to facilitate research and information gathering, library staff may limit access to particular functions on particular computers and may extend use on a particular computer, at the discretion of the library staff.

Use of the Hackley Public Library Internet stations is on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance reservations cannot be accepted.

Staff assistance is available to assist individuals with downloading and with configuring or operating their own equipment, including getting connected to the wireless network.

Responsibility

The parents of minor children must assume responsibility for their children’s use of the Internet through the Hackley Public Library connection. Parents/guardians of minors are responsible for monitoring material accessed by minors.

As required by Michigan P.A. 212, use of the Internet by individuals under 18 years of age or by minors who are not accompanied by their parent of guardian must be filtered. Filters may be disabled for individuals 18 years of age or older upon request.

Users of the Hackley Public Library’s Internet connection are responsible for adherence to any copyright, licensing, and other applicable laws and regulations.

Hackley Public Library Internet connections may not be used for any purposes which violate U.S. or State of Michigan laws, including but not limited to the transmission of obscenity, child pornography or defamatory speech.

Users agree to respect the rights and privacy of other users. Use should be consistent with accepted community standards. Malicious use is not acceptable and will result in suspension or cancellation of the Internet privilege.

Users agree to respect the integrity of computing and network systems. Users shall not intentionally develop or use programs that harass other users, infiltrate a computer, computing system or network, and/or damage or alter the hardware or software components or the set up of a computer, computing system or network.

Users of Library provided Internet access equipment must sign in, giving both first and last names. ID may be checked to determine that users are age 18 or older.

The Hackley Public Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from use of the Library’s network or wireless Internet connections. The Hackley Public Library makes no warranties of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the Internet service provided. Specific sites on the Internet may be unavailable due to technical reasons beyond local control.

Inappropriate Use

The use of the Hackley Public Library’s network and Internet stations is a privilege. Inappropriate use will result in immediate disconnection and suspension of use for the day, and may result in lengthier suspension or cancellation of this privilege. Violators may be asked to leave the library for the day. A second incident will result in suspension from using the Internet for six months or longer, or cancellation of Internet usage privilege. Unlawful use may result in prosecution.

The staff of the Hackley Public Library monitors the use of the network and the Internet workstations to ensure that users are not in violation of acceptable use guidelines. Use of the Library’s network is not private.
Users who violate the terms of this policy or other library policies or who use the network for abusive, malicious or illegal activity will be banned from the network and may be subject to prosecution.

Inappropriate use will be determined by the librarian in charge, following this policy, rules of use developed for this library, and all applicable laws and regulations. Decisions of the librarian in charge may be appealed to the library director, whose decision is final.

Wireless Internet Access

The Hackley Public Library also offers free public Internet access for persons with wireless-enabled devices.
This service, which allows individuals to connect to the Internet from the Hackley Public Library using their own equipment, uses the Library’s network resources. Anyone using the Library’s wireless service must abide by this Internet Access policy.
