(RESCHEDULED JUNE 5, 2020: VOICES OF RESURRECTION)
This program celebrates the beauty of the natural realm and its restorative power against the backdrop of human life—with its hopes, dreams and losses. Barber’s nostalgic work for soprano and orchestra is a journey through summertime scenes of childhood innocence. Mahler’s set of four pieces for mezzo and orchestra follows a wayfarer who is sustained in life’s ups and downs by the joy and wonder of nature. Full of sunlight and happiness, Brahms’s dancelike Symphony no. 2 is often compared to Beethoven’s beloved and playful “Pastoral” Symphony.

Scott Speck, conductor
Martha Guth, soprano
Susan Platts, mezzo

Barber:
Knoxville: Summer of 1915
