All BHM programs and events are free to the public, and are brought to our community through the generous bequest from Bess Commodore.

** Tuesday, January 28 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM

Please join us for an evening of inspirational music and some Black History as we kick-off our Black History events!  The Kingdom Embassy Covenant Church Praise Team will be sharing their singing talent that is sure to warm the heart.  There will also be a special Praise Dance performed by Tiffany and Triniti Jones. 

All ages welcome. Free.



** 6th Annual Black History Trivia Contest

Feb 1, Saturday, 2:00 - 3:00 PM

Do you know your Black History?

Form a group with your friends and pit your knowledge against other teams!  Call Hackley Public Library at 231-722-8011 or visit  our online calendar event to register your team (up to 4 per team). 

Teams will be asked questions on Black History. We'll have prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams, as well as some consolation prizes. Cheer on your friends and family!





** Poetry Open Mic Night and Black History Month Calendar Awards

Feb 3, Monday, 6:00 - 7:30 PM

Read your own poetry or read works from your favorite Black History/Black Experience/African American poet.

Walk-ins are welcome, or feel free to register at this link if you wish to share a poem/piece.

Also, from 6-6:30 pm, those who have been selected for our annual Black History month calendar will be honored and the calendar will be distributed.

** Sweet Soul Dessert Food Contest

(Black History Month)

Feb 8, Saturday, 2:00 - 3:00 PM

Get your recipes out and find your best soul food dessert. Compete for the best in the city!  Bring enough for attendees, plus the judge, to taste.

Register by calling HPL or visit the online calendar event by February 7th. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place contestants in the adult category and to the 1st place winner in the children’s category.

** Ebony Road Players presents: “The Meeting” - A Play (Black History Month)

Feb 22, Saturday, 2:00 - 3:00 PM

Don't miss this moving play, depicting the supposed meeting of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Differing in their philosophies, but alike in their mutual respect, the two men debate their varying approaches to the same grave social problems, both prepared to die for their beliefs but neither aware of how soon their assassins’ bullets await them.

** Jon Covington and the Men from the Documentary BLACK MAN

Muskegon native Jon Covington’s documentary Black Man comes to life in a live version at Hackley Public Library. Unfolding past and present-day stories of African American men, this compelling event will showcase influential and universal stories from all walks of life.
