Despite his status as a world-traveling academic, nobody in his family could say what he did for work.
The Interaction Cowboy follows the life and work of one man (Muskegon resident Tim Koschmann), which has taken a meandering path, from being targeted by the FBI for protesting the Vietnam War to traveling the world as a leading expert in a little-known field of sociology that studies interaction. His experiences and learning built on each other to put him, perhaps surprisingly, at the center of a fight to reform our education system.
It is also a personal story for the filmmaker (Fred Koschmann), as he didn’t know much about his dad’s background growing up, and an attempt to get outside of his own experience and explore the education system in the US.
We follow Jitu Brown, a community organizer from Chicago who leads the Journey for Justice Alliance, Mike Hutchinson, a director of the Oakland Public School Board, and other leading experts as they wrestle with current issues in the American school system. Education matters now more than ever, and this film—through the lens of one man’s story and with the help of other parents, activists, educators, and experts—looks at both how we got here and what we can do about it.
